The gang is widely known for its rivalry with the Crips. It is identified by the red color worn by its members and by particular gang symbols , including distinctive hand signs. The Bloods comprise various subgroups known as "sets", between which significant differences exist, such as colors, clothing, operations, and political ideas that may be in open conflict with each other. Since the gang's creation, it has branched throughout the United States.

The men arrived in twos and threes, Crips and Bloods, young and middle-aged, gathering around a picnic table in a Compton park to confront their sworn enemies. After two hours of negotiations on a chilly, overcast Saturday in April, they came to an agreement — not a truce, exactly, but a tentative cease-fire. The losses had been heavy, with nearly a dozen dead on each side.

The CRIPs were not always the gang-bangers they are known to be. The CRIPs were formed in Raymond Washington, a high school student at the time founded the organization in response to the increasing level of police harassment of the Black community.
