Welcome to the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine — Jacksonville. We offer the following educational opportunities:. Our department provides treatment for a wide spectrum of conditions affecting the maxillofacial region. Our residents receive full training in all aspects of maxillofacial surgery. Our faculty are consultants for the hospital's Level I trauma center , which receives the most critical trauma patients from all of Northeast Florida and South Georgia. Our department works closely with the Center for Pediatric Facial Disorders to treat a multitude of pediatric cranio-maxillofacial anomalies. Our faculty and residents provide comprehensive treatment for the management of benign and malignant conditions of the maxillofacial region, including microvascular reconstruction. Residents also obtain a wide exposure to facial aesthetic surgery. In addition to the outstanding surgical training, our residents enjoy the many amenities of Jacksonville coastal living. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is surgery to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. It is a recognized international surgical specialty, and it is one of the nine specialties of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only recognized dental specialists who, after completing dental school, are surgically trained in an American Dental Association-accredited hospital-based residency program for a minimum of four years.

The department dates back to the early 's, when housed within the department of surgery, its first resident graduated from the program. Our faculty members perform the entire spectrum of traditional and contemporary oral and maxillofacial surgery OMS.
It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. Oral Surgery is a separate recognized speciality confined to surgery within the mouth. After a full degree in dentistry, the dental specialty residency training of oral and maxillofacial surgery may or may not include a degree in medicine. In countries such as the UK and most of Europe, it is recognized as a specialty of medicine and a degree in medicine or both degrees in dentistry and medicine are compulsory.
